(813 posts)The first Democratic President I can remember (though LBJ was POTUS when I was born) was Jimmy Carter, and I was 10 when he was elected. I don't think he got the rash of shit that either Bill Clinton or Barack Obama have gotten from the Republicans.
Of course, he followed an old-style moderate Republican, Jerry Ford. The Republicans also didn't have the media machine (Limbaugh, Hannity, Fux Noise, Coulter, Savage, Levin) that they do now.
Bill Clinton? Almost from the word "go," it was "take this guy and his agenda down." They succeeded on health care, but I have to say that Mr. Clinton rolled over and let them kick him on that one...and then we ended up with the Era of Newt that we have not recovered from yet.
Barack Obama? Really no different from what they did to Mr. Clinton except for the ugly, racial tinges to it. The "birthers" have got to be the worst troglodytes I've yet seen the GOP produce.
During both the Clinton and Obama Administrations these goofy wannabe "militias" raised their ugly head...but they were quite content with Bush II.
It seems to me that ever since 20 January 1981 the far right of the GOP (which is the GOP now) have believed that the Presidency is somehow theirs by divine right...Reagan handed off to Bush I, who was supposed to have two terms (perish the thought that voters in 1992 thought otherwise!!!), hand off to Dan Quayle (that scares the hell out of me to even think of - I grew up in northern Indiana not far from where he was from and remember him as a Senator; I couldn't believe Bush Senior picked him as VP), etc. etc.
When it didn't work out that way, they got real mad, kind of like a two-year-old...and they're still doing it.
