Hundreds of millions of prescriptions have been dispensed in Africa to prevent river blindness and other tropical diseases, so if side-effects were a major problem, its use would surely have been discontinued long ago. And there's strong evidence that this usage pattern is related to the lower frequency of Covid cases in those countries when compared to adjacent African countries that didn't participate in these prevention programs.
