As soon as I read that, I know the official inflation figure doesn't apply to most people.

The people who do the inflation figure reporting in Australia do the same thing though.

Polish the numbers until they look acceptable - acceptable but irrelevant to most people.

My 'index of inflation' measurement is simple:

- how much my annual household bills go up by.
- how much $/shopping bag I need to pay at the supermarket checkout.
- how much money is left in my wallet at the end of the month.
