NATO has taken a major step toward modernizing its airborne surveillance capabilities by selecting Sweden’s Saab GlobalEye early warning aircraft as the preferred replacement for its decades-old AWACS fleet, according to Reuters.

As Donald Trump was landing in Türkiye for this week’s NATO Summit, the alliance made the decision to choose Sweden’s company over Boeing. The proposed acquisition could be worth as much as $4.5 billion and includes the purchase of up to 10 aircraft. If negotiations proceed as expected, Saab says deliveries could begin in 2030, with each aircraft expected to cost between $400 million and $450 million.

The decision marks a significant win for Saab over U.S. aerospace giant Boeing, whose E-7 Wedgetail was also competing for the contract. NATO’s existing Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft have served since the Cold War, but alliance leaders have long called for a new generation of airborne surveillance is needed to address evolving threats, including drone swarms and increasingly complex battlefields......................
