(17,424 posts)29. Various news outlets have referred to presidents as "Mr." long before this.
Back in the '80s I remember someone in my family complaining that it was disrespectful for reporters to refer to Ronald Reagan as "Mr. Reagan" rather than "President Reagan."

One of the national news, either CBS or ABC, refers to President Obama as Mr.Obama. It gets my goat.
