I think they are a symbol of how Israel is destroying itself.

For the record, past peace negotiations (Camp David under Clinton, Annapolis under Bush) have said that some of the settlements will remain part of israel in a deal and in exchange Israel would transfer some of there land in the north to the future state of Palestine.
