In reply to the discussion: Obama Tells Democrats They Must Be Open to Entitlement Changes [View all]RVN VET
(492 posts)I said before the last election that if Obama allows the GOP to have its way with Social Security, I would be through with him. Social Security is hanging tough and could easily be made much stronger if the President only has the will to do it. If he doesn't, and the rest of the Demos cave as well, I'm out. It's the one thing I can't abide by. It's Solomon agreeing to split the baby, for heaven's sake.
Is it possible that Obama doesn't see this? Or is it that he just doesn't care?
And, yes, I'm well into Social Security age. But, no, I'm not pissed about my benefits. I'm a Federal retiree with only a tad of Social Security benefits. Losing what Social Security pays me would not hurt me. But losing Social Security would hurt millions of hard working people, Americans all. And please don't believe the crap about how the cuts would only be marginal. Once the door were opened, the cuts wouldn't stop. They'd change the COLA, they'd change the age for benefits, they'd change the formula for computing it. So if Social Security gets gutted -- or even trimmed, dammit -- as part of a grand bargain, the hell with them all. They -- President and Congress -- will have abandoned us in favor of a grand bargain to ensure the continued prosperity of the very people we all voted to rein in in the last election.
Sorry for the rant. I have defended Obama up until now. I have thought of him as a very cagey politician, working against a GOP that has said publicly it wanted to destroy his presidency. But if Social Security is offered up in sacrifice, the President loses my support and respect, period.
