The real proof will be the agenda that this pope sets and whether or not it places the Vatican on a course to make real contributions to improve the human condition.

I've never understood why Catholics place such an emphasis on the nobility of suffering. Shouldn't an organization as large and influential as the Vatican focus more on eradicating human suffering - as a goal at least?

I'm having trouble figuring out what this pope is aiming to accomplish. To me it feels like he wants to get more converts by courting those who need real help and not provide it unless the needy give something in return. Today the price is your very soul. This needs to change.

This is no different than any other missionary group setting out to convert the heathens.

Appearing in an open pope mobile, wearing minimalist jewelry and looking constantly confused do not a compassionate person make.

I know this atheist's opinion is worth little more than a bucket of warm spit. But as a gay man whose community was in the crosshairs of Benedict, I tend to pay attention.
