As a parent of a son with autism I can tell you that when my son was first diagnosed I knew few people who even knew about autism. Now whenever I explain my son's abnormal behavior and say he is autistic people want to talk and say I have a child who is also on the spectrum, or a niece or nephew, neighbor's kids, co-worker etc. This is bigger than they are willing to admit. If we don't spend the money on early intervention now we will be paying a lot more in social services, group homes and medical services for these people. My son is 20 and there isn't a lot out there for him now nor was there then. There are a lot more early intervention services now but only if you live in an area where they offer them or you can afford them because you can go bankrupt trying to keep up with medical bills. If you live in a poor area and your child is diagnosed you are shit out of luck.
