...you need to request a tour through the Ufficio Scavi at the Vatican. I requested 7 months prior to my visit and as lucky to get a 'ticket'. The tour is not done every day, and is limited to 10 or less people. This is a true behind-the-scenes tour. You are brought down to the sealed (for temp and humidity) necropolis far below the floor of the papal crypts underneath St. Peters. It was THE highlight of my trip to Rome.
