Kerry is half owner of the Boston property, but none of the others. The reason for the pre nup is to insure that the assets left by John Heinz go to his children. (The prenup does cover death.)

Kerry was very privileged, but he also spent most of his adult live in public service. Until he married Teresa, he was among the poorer Senators. He did inherit money from his mother and at her death became a beneficiary of the Forbes trust.

He himself has always spoken of having a privileged background.

He will not inherit the bulk of Teresa's estate - her kids will, but he will never have a money problem even if he does nothing after being SoS.

Personally, he is likely no richer than Hagel, the Clintons or Obama. (In Obama's case, even if he is not wealthy now, he will be when he is out of office. With his writing ability and story, his Presidential memoirs may be the most interesting in decades.
