In reply to the discussion: Mitt Romney: Susan G. Komen Was Right to Cut Planned Parenthood [View all]Swede Atlanta
(3,596 posts)The public outcry against Komen organization over their decision to de-fund Planned Parenthood was swift and decisive. Aside from the kool-aid drinking fridge element that is the GOP core base, the rest of the country has a totally different view of the situation.
There is a general belief in reasonable and affordable access to health care, including for women's breast and other cancer screenings. This is the moral position. The fact Planned Parenthood, in a totally segregated portion of their operations, provides abortion services should not affect their eligibility for funding for general health services. As well all know only 3% of PP activities involved abortion-related services.
Secondly, while NO ONE is pro-abortion, the majority of Americans believe that abortion should be RARE but LEGAL. There is no interest in pushing these procedures to back allies.
But those like Mittens that would as soon outlaw abortion should be willing to pay much much more in taxes to pay for the pre-natal care, delivery and related costs, all post-natal care, child care, children's health insurance and care, pre-K, etc. services until the child is of legal age.
But the R's only interest is when the fetus is in the womb. Once it is born they have no interest in insuring it receives proper medical care, nutritious food, appropriate education, etc.
