(60,765 posts)and had 55 Senators - far more than anyone thinks the Republicans could possibly have in 2015 - when they impeached Clinton, but the Senate did NOT throw him out of office.
Not to mention, my observation that the Presidents who were impeached in modern times were impeached for personal or party actions - Monica and Watergate. There was a far better case to impeach Bush for lying us into the Iraq war (and the Downing Street memos were there in 2005 or 2006 to prove that he had) or Bush 1 and/or Reagan for Iran/Contra which was illegal on many many dimensions - from arming the Contras AGAINST legislation from Congress, to trading Iran weapons for money to covertly aid the Contras and to get some hostages in Lebanon returned and allowing the Contras to bring cocaine into the country.
My view is that it is easy for America (or any country really) to reject a leader for PERSONAL failures than for actions they made the country take - as the latter reflects on the country - the former just on the leader.
