But overall he's actually beating the rebellion at the moment, so you'd still have to wonder what he would be hoping to accomplish...and who exactly he'd be massacring. Most of the anti-Assad civilians have evacuated the battle areas at this point, there are no longer any street protests in the government held areas. A massacre still seems unlikely.
