I don't think it made the papers, but there was a for-real "Hunt For Red October" incident around 1980, when the Soviets really did lose one of the nuclear subs in the Pacific. *Poof* just disappeared into thin air (well, OK, water). There was one hell of a scramble to see who could find it first.
