You're going to label conservatives as protective of children and 'compassionate liberals' as allowing harm to come to children? Really? Give it a little think-through: who's more likely to prattle on about the big, bad 'nanny state' trampling on the gawd-given rights of parents? Conservative assholes who are appalled at the cost of caring for children whose parents have been found unfit? Same assholes who rail against even the most rudimentary care for infants and children - trying to eliminate school breakfasts, for example.

You may want to reconsider your demonization of 'compassionate liberals' by suggesting they're responsible for the atrocity you mention.
