People get too emotionally involved when a child is in the equation, but the sad fact is that, in general terms an adult's lungs are not appropriate for transplant into a child (for a variety of technical reasons). When good medical practice takes second place to emotion rather than fact this type of problem occurs. So now, as you say, two adults who also desperately needed those lungs didn't get them and at least one set was essentially wasted.
