In reply to the discussion: Santorum says Obama elected as 'a rock star' [View all]alp227
(33,284 posts)basically that book claims that Obama campaign brainwashed hordes of voters under 30 through facebook and promotions on college campuses in 2008. Also youtube has viral videos like "Idiots who voted for Obama" (youtube ID e_JJLLfTR8I) and "Obama Is Going To Pay For My Gas And Mortgage!!!" (P36x8rTb3jI)...or others if you type in the keywords dumb Obama voters, that illustrate Mattera's theory that Obama relied on mindless low information followers. So be advised this isn't the first time people have accused Obama of using a celebrity appeal to be elected.
But now, through a recession that especially increased unemployment for the youngest Americans, those same 20-somethings Mattera/the conservatives complained about either will sit out 2012/don't feel that much excited (see NY Times "Students Lose Zeal for Aiding Obama Again" and the DU thread about that). And then there are many in that age group (I as a college student do know some) now embracing Ron Paul for his appeal to individual freedoms and pro civil liberties positions (and given the millenials' dislike for authority they can indeed relate to Paul). So right now Obama can't use a "rock star of 2008" appeal anymore he instead needs to call out Boehner/Cantor/the hyperpartisan electioneers in Congress including the senate minority leader McConnell who straight up admitted that his goal was to defeat Obama in 2012. (Did Democrats in Congress ever talk about defeating Bush as the #1 goal in 2004?)
