(2,287 posts)If the roles were reversed and these were Black and Hispanic kids that trashed the home of a White NFL pro bowler we wouldn't be having a conversation like this. The kids would be derided as animals and we would be treated to endless discussions about the state of dysfunction of Black or Hispanic families. Bill O'Reilly would be lecturing us on how we need to become better parents to prevent these things from happening in the future.
If Brian Holloway were White, we'd hear endlessly about how he tried to reach out to "those" people and their miscreant kids and use this as a teachable moment. In many circles, he'd be hailed as hero and he would be splashed across the airways as a champion of change, understanding and compassion. And if some of the parents of the Black or Hispanic kids dared to threaten to sue him or tell him he had no right to tell them how to discipline their kids, they would be mocked and ridiculed endlessly as parents who are clueless about child rearing and aren't even probably fit to raise kids. And we certainly wouldn't be educated about the state of Mr Holloway's finances or how he probably deserved what was coming to him. Nope. The whole narrative would be totally different.
After a large section of this country demonized a young Black man who simply went to get a snack during the halftime of a basketball game and got shot through the chest for his troubles, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying fuck those spoiled brats and their clueless parents.
