One aspect for consideration.. This particular "showdown" is supposedly about trying to prevent the Obamacare legislation from being enacted.

But if the Republicans walk away from this believing that it is a winning strategy, the next time it will be something else. SNAP benefits will surely be taken up. They can do this every year or two, and will if they think it will enable their destructive goals. It would be shocking if medicare and Medicaid both did not receive the same treatment. And eventually, the SS program itself. They have made their intent to kill all of these programs clear for a great many years.
