13. I lived in a town with smog like that.

Back in the late 50's/early 60's.

It had pulp and paper mills on 3 sides, and was in a valley.You could barely see the front of your car.
Usually it would clear by afternoon, but sometimes on still days, you woke to smog and went to bed with smog outside.
The mills had been worked by 3 generations of families, but environmental concerns demanded better air quality.
Rather than comply, the mills shut down and/or moved to other areas.
No more smog. Fewer jobs, but the air was cleaner.
