MADISON Gov. Scott Walker soundly rejected the option to set up an online health care exchange under the Affordable Care Act, but he or future governors could hypothetically still do so.
If that happens, Republican Rep. David Craig wants to make sure he and his fellow legislators have a say.
Under a bill out Tuesday co-sponsored by the Waterford-area lawmaker, any future state-based exchange must get approval from the Legislature before Wisconsin could set it up.
While Gov. Walker has rightfully decided that the State of Wisconsin should not participate in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act by creating a state-based health care exchange, we as a Legislature must ensure that any attempts to set up an exchange in the future have legislative input, Craig, R-Big Bend, said in an email.
The online exchange also known as the Health Insurance Marketplace is a venue to browse and buy private health insurance for uninsured individuals, families and small business owners.
Walker was one of 27 governors who opted to have the federal government run that marketplace, rather than the state, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
