(1,314 posts)But the dog we tried on a veg diet was (rescue also, we found him on Christmas day wandering the streets) as far as I know a Burmese Mtn /Shepherd mix. He had the thickest under coat I have ever seen. After bathing, it seemed to take 8 hours for him to dry.
Anyway, this was back in the early 2000's. There was a brand of vegetarian food out (I apologize if I said it was vegan: it wasn't vegan, it had dairy in it). It was canned and dried. We bought both canned and dried, and mixed them together. He ate it the first time, and then after that, he just spit it out. ...and this dog would eat anything. I'm guessing it must have just been rice and cheese or something.
Anyway, after that, we accepted the fact that he wouldn't eat without a meat based diet.
We saved him...he was going to be euthanized with in a day or two. He was a mean looking dude with a dark black nose. But a fluffy innocent sweetheart who was about 1 year old when we got him. He was a large dog of 70 lbs, but he lived to be 17. Loved him until the very end (4 years ago).
Here's his pic...

sorry for the long response.
