(10,857 posts)This implies to me that the President sees some sort of intricacy to this problem which is not being publicly discussed.
Because otherwise, threatening to raise taxes on the industry should lead to higher fuel prices.
Unless, of course, the price of gasoline at the pump is somehow being manipulated by the oil companies and speculators....
Then, all of a sudden, attacking their profit margin from another direction makes perfect sense. Suddenly, it makes sense for oil corporations to reign in rampant speculation driving the price up, lest the taking be counterbalanced by the loss of guaranteed profits underwritten by the federal government.
But the oil companies have repeatedly told Congress that they have no control over such things!
Could they have been telling Congress... something other than the truth?
