The underlying thesis of the excellent book "JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters" is that Kennedy was undergoing a kind of redemption during his last few months on Earth. The catastrophic implications of the Cuban Missile Crisis along with the tragic death of his son Patrick just a few days after his birth seemed to cause a seismic shift in his priorities. It inspired him to be a better President as well as a better husband and father.

The back-channel negotiations that helped to avert nuclear war as well as his extraordinary speech at American University seemed to indicate that JFK was a changed man. Unfortunately, he was also a marked man.
