If you decide you want to discuss Sarah Palin at all (a somewhat dubious premise to start with), it's quite possible to criticize her and expose her inanity without being tacky about it. Bashir's remark was tacky.
Graphic imagery of this sort could be excused if, although offensive to many people, it furthered the dialog. That's not the case here. His vitriol added nothing to our understanding of the subject he was addressing.
A further point, secondary but still important, is that Bashir's remark gave Palin and her allies the opportunity to go into poutrage mode, which they much prefer to any substantive discussion of issues.
