In reply to the discussion: Nelson Mandela dead at 95 [View all]Nonhlanhla
(2,074 posts)As a South African who was somewhat involved in anti-apartheid politics as a student in South Africa in the late 80s/early 90s, this news is particularly poignant. I can still remember, like it was yesterday, when I was sitting in front of the television as Mr. Mandela was released on that memorable day. I can remember so well, a few years later, when we stood in line to vote, black and white, in South Africa's first democratic elections, and when, subsequently, this great man was sworn in as president of our beloved country. The years since (many of which I have spent in the US due to studies and later work, but I visit regularly and keep in touch with people there) have not been without its problems for South Africa, and sadly Mr. Mandela's successors have not been cut of the same cloth. But Madiba has shone like a beacon in the darkness, and he always will. May he now rest in eternal peace, a well deserved rest.
A great soul has passed.
Thank you, sir, for everything you sacrificed so that South Africa could become a better place for all its people.
