If they go, I think the usual "contact the nearest American consulate" advice in case of trouble abroad will not result in much help this time.

Imagine the dialog: "American Consulate? HELP! We're being attacked by an angry mob with clubs and machetes!"

Consulate operator:"What is your location?"

Caller: "We're at the Mandela funeral!"

Consulate Operator:"Who is 'we'?"

Caller: "We're with the Westboro Baptist Church!"

Consulate Operator: "I'll put you through to the right extension immediately."

"Caller: "Please hurry! They look like they want to tear us apart!"

Recorded voice: "This is the office of special services of the United
States Consulate in Johannesburg. Please select from the
following five options: For loss of passport, press 1. If you have a medical
emergency, press 2. If you have had a vehicular incident and need
