WASHINGTON — Bob Kerrey said Wednesday he received certain assurances from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., before launching his campaign for the Nebraska Senate seat.

"The most important one was that when it came time to organize the Senate, he would respect my previous 12 years of previous service in the Senate, with no specific promise about seniority," Kerrey told The World-Herald.

Seniority is a tricky subject on Capitol Hill, and Republicans are already characterizing Kerrey and Reid's discussions as a smarmy backroom deal.

It would be difficult for Reid to make any blanket promises of seniority without starting a revolt among other Senate Democrats.
