(2,983 posts)I wasn't crazy about JP II, but I respected him. As a former/non practicing Catholic, this kind of nonsense infuriates me. He (Benedict) has no business telling Nations how to manage their policies, their law. He has little respect even within his own church, so it should come as no surprise that he makes such outrageous statements to appeal to the more right wing, evangelical members of the Catholic church. He may even draw in some of the more evangelical protestants with his nonsense. At least, I suspect that that is his intention.
Priests like Andrew Greeley are probably the primary reason I haven't written off the Catholic church completely. Had a man such as him ever become Pope, the Church might have stood a chance at recovering, gaining some integrity, some respect. It could have been (and should be) a force in the world for tolerance, kindness, compassion, open-mindedness, such things as Jesus once preached. Instead it is run by puffed up old fools who have forgotten (if they ever knew) what it means to feel passion or compassion.
Unfortunately the Cardinals managed to elect this twit. I still have trouble understanding why. Were they truly so afraid of change? So afraid of progress? There were better options, some of whom might have helped revive the church into something that Catholics (especially those like the ones in my family) could be proud of again.
Instead, the mess continues... and this damn fool continues to make it worse. On behalf of Catholics everywhere, practicing or non... I apologize for this damned fool. The Catholics of this world deserve better and so do those who have been criticized by this bastard.
