Like you, I remember with fondness and admiration those who are like Father Greeley, or who were like him before they left the priesthood. I also admire those Catholics (as you note, practicing and non) who are like them - and not at all like Santorum and his ilk. Unfortunately, the mentality of the hierarchy is fixated - as is the case with most hierarchies - on maintaining its power and control. The advancement of women and legal recognition of rights for those whose orientation is not heterosexual are considered terrible threats by those whose beliefs currently prevail in the hierarchy.
I have come a long ways from the religion of my youth ("cradle Catholic" as I was). I no longer adhere to any institutionalized religion whatsoever and never will again. I do, however, respect those who find solace in one but who, above all, remain decent, committed and compassionate human beings who do not presume to impose their personal or political choices on others - especially while hiding behind tax-free status.
There are still too many "practicing" people of any institutionalized religion who consider that their religious label gives them carte blanche to act in very inhumane ways. Not allowing those whose sexual orientation is not heterosexual - which is not a "choice" - to have the same legal rights as heterosexuals is inhumane in fact.
