If you want to be Her Majesty's envoy to the United States? You need to be a career Foreign Service officer with extensive diplomatic experience and previous appointments as head of mission to other countries. If you want to be the US Ambassador to the Court of St James? You need to have raised a couple of million for the President, diplomatic experience not required. But hey, the US is a meritocracy, right?
