Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) released a statement on Monday calling the shooting death of Trayvon Martin a hate crime and urging the Department of Justice to investigate.
"We urge the Department of Justice to immediately and thoroughly investigate the shooting death of Trayvon Martin as a hate crime, the statement read in part. This case compromises the integrity of our legal system and sets a horrific precedent of vigilante justice. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus stand together in the name of justice for Trayvon. As a nation we cannot, should not, and will not ignore, Trayvons brutal murder and the inconceivable fact that his killer remains free.
¬snip¬
Contrary to the flippant way this case has been handled, his life had meaning and purpose, Cleaver continued. Trayvon had a family, friends and a future all taken away because of the color of his skin. We will not stop until justice for Trayvon is served because a life is a terrible thing to take.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus released a statement shortly after the CBCs, also pushing for a DoJ investigation.
It is with dire urgency that we ask Sec. Eric Holder and the Dept. of Justice to launch an independent investigation of the killing of Trayvon Martin, said a statement from caucus chairman Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-Tex.). Our children of color need and deserve equal protection under the law."

Report: Shooter in racially charged death often called cops
By Melanie Eversley, USA TODAY
The white neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida whose fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen has sparked outrage appeared to be fixated on young black males, according to a report in The Miami Herald.
Criminal justice student George Zimmerman, 28, the self-appointed head of the neighborhood watch at the Retreat of Twin Lakes in Sanford, Fla., is credited with cracking some crimes and thwarting others, the Herald reports, but his shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin is attracting criticism from across the country.
According to the Herald, Zimmerman would often go door-to-door in the neighborhood, warning residents to be careful of young black males. The news organization also reports Zimmerman was energetic in his efforts to protect the neighborhood, and that he contacted police 46 times since Jan. 1, 2011, to report disturbances, break-ins and other incidents.
"He would circle the block and circle it; it was weird," Teontae Amie, 17, told the Herald.
