UConn Grad Student Employees Will Soon Bargain First UAW Contract [View all]

Nearly 2200 graduate student employees at the University of Connecticut will begin bargaining their first union contract soon. Two-thirds of the university teaching assistant’s signed cards recently to join the Graduate Employee Union/United Auto Workers (GEU-UAW). The teaching assistants reached an agreement with the university to recognize the union based on majority recognition. The university also agreed not to campaign against unionization. Graduate employees at over sixty other universities nationwide have unionized. The UConn grad student employees had the support of Connecticut’s entire congressional delegation and 70 state lawmakers. UAW President Bob King commended UConn for respecting the rights of its workers.

Please note the card check that anti-union people hate worked without any problems. Just google card check and you will see what I mean. I wish Obama had fought for the Employee Free Choice Act. It can be used now ONLY if the employer agrees. The act would have left it up to the employees.
