It is not clear their is a mechanism for Russia to remove Putin --- and his popularity soared with his actions on Crimea.
I think Ukraine has a really tough situation. An insurgency is hard anywhere, but here there is the complexity of Russia cheering them on - while arguing against any action to stop things that ANY country would stop.
I think they should have laid low this weekend - other than to document the illegitimacy of an election for which there were not even voting rolls - and no way to see if people already voted.
