I don't ever recall being alerted by a loud motorcycle on behind the wheel. Most cars today are pretty quiet inside and those noises are negligible when drivers keep their windows up.
But sitting in my living room, as they decide to accelerate while going past because there is open road, it only serves to drown out any conversation or the radio or television in my house. And at 2AM it pulls you right out of bed.
You would have to show me some pretty good statistics on the noise being intentional for safety because there would be just as many countering that as the noise level has to be hard on the bikers ears as well as bystanders.

Sorry to stray here: I understand the safety bit for loud Harleys‚ but some are way overboard loud.
