Militia groups moving to help secure Texas-Mexico border
5, 2014
On Saturday, the Brownsville Herald reported that a coalition of "Patriot" groups has put out a call for supporters to go to the Texas-Mexico border for an operation called "Secure our Border- Laredo."
According to spokeswoman Denice Freeman, the operation is a call for civilian militia members -- both armed and unarmed -- to guard private property in Texas locations like Laredo where owners feel threatened by drug cartels and from gangs, particularly the MS-13 gangs, a Salvadoran-based gang considered among the most dangerous in the country by law enforcement.
Freeman also said militia members will become more visible in border communities over the coming days. She also said the group's commander, Chip Davis, is warning members against using violent means.
"This is not a go-in-guns-blazing kind of thing, Freeman said. This will be handled with the utmost professionalism and security and safety for everyone involved.
But Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said he doesn't want the militia in the Rio Grande Valley.
