People sometimes take out loans later in life in an effort to retrain after being laid off. Or they might defer in an attempt to get other bills paid off (like medical expenses).

But I note that you are focusing on the individual ("what did you do wrong&quot as opposed to systemic issues. And adding "I am not judging" doesn't change my opinion of your question. FWIW.
