Because the guy was an unstable, asshole wife beater who was also a judge. He was clearly a threat to his wife and others, and needs to spend some time behind bars.

He clearly doesn't deserve to own guns or keep his position on the bench, but that portion of the story seems to be overshadowed by his gun and ammo collection.
