In reply to the discussion: Dwayne Wade's nephew among 13 injured in Chicago shootings [View all]joe_sixpack
(721 posts)37. Well, CPD Superintendent Garry McCarthy seems to think it's a problem
So far this year, there have been 94 murders in Chicago. There were 66 in the same period last year. There have been 408 shootings so far this year, compared to 296 in the same period in 2011.

Surely those numbers don't paint a positive picture for you.
That's from a wbbm news radio 780 article from 19 Mar. I wouldn't classify that as hype. I'm not disputing these numbers compared to anything decades ago. I'm saying that Chicago currently has a serious gang problem and I think the Police Superintendent and even Mayor Rahm Emanuel would agree. As he stated in the same story:
The violence this past weekend is unacceptable to me and every law abiding Chicago resident, the mayor said. Our streets belong to the families and children of our city; not to the gangs and gangbangers. The violence this weekend underscores that Chicago has a unique gang problem and I have discussed with Superintendent McCarthy a citywide anti-gang strategy similar to the successful strategy CPD recently used with the Maniac Latin Disciples.
I'm from Chicago and frequently talk to people still living there. If you are a current resident and don't believe there's an issue here, then you're the first resident I've talked to who feels that way.

Surely, they'll be able to find out who sold the gun once they catch the assailant.

I'm sure once they catch this assailant they'll be able to trace the gun back to the gunshop
