(3,732 posts)I am also not naïve. Atrocities happen every day all over the world, that doesn't make the situation with ISIL any less important. I will agree with you that the MSM is guilty of selection of the most 'glamorous' of atrocities to hit the 'breaking news' button. None of that diminishes the horrors peoples around the world are facing at the hands of tyrants.
As for me... I have never turned my back on the problems in Africa or in countries like Haiti. When I lived in Miami I worked closely with human rights groups to help the Haitians. My pet peeve, the wet foot-dry foot nonsense that allowed Cubans the chance to stay in the US while Haitians and other refugees are turned away. Their plight often worst than those from Cuba. (Please don't take this as an anti-Cuban comment.. it isn't. I lived with that community for ten years and I love the people.) Since I've returned to Kentucky I have worked with African refugees, helping them find quality job opportunities and help raise funds to send to organizations in their countries.
I personally do not take these airstrikes lightly. I do however, agree with the actions of the US in this situation. As I said I am not naïve. kill ISIL and another group will rise up. The problem is, at the moment, ISIL has murdered hundreds, frightened people have fled their homes not knowing what fate holds for them. If you don't agree these people need to be stopped, then who does? The rebels killing innocents in Africa? I'd like to see them taken out as well. Sometimes, however, the solutions are nota as easy as we would like.
I don't agree with your premise that the US always makes things worse because of its enormous firepower. Things get worse when people like Bush and Cheney are in charge. I feel our current president is handling this situation as well as anyone could. With measured response and concern for the region and it's people. We need that.
Hopefully, we will find a way to help those in Africa to end the atrocities there. In the meantime, I do support the President's actions but I don't like putting our troops in harm's way again.
