(3,732 posts)I don't like the fact that US weapons and equipment fell into the hands of ISIL. If I remember correctly, we left those weapons in the hands of the Iraqi army with the expectation they wouldn't turn tail and run at the first sign of conflict. If they had anticipated they would run, I imagine those weapons would have been destroyed.
Who do I blame for that behavior? Not the US Military... I firmly believe the US troops, who trained the Iraqis did the best they could do with what they had to work with. I blame the Bush administration for disbanding the Iraqi military when they invaded Iraq. I'm sorry I don't have time to look up articles but I heard a general and a correspondent discussing this about a week ago on CNN. They said Bush didn't consider the consequences when he had the Iraqi military disbanded. They should have kept the Iraq army structure intact and vetted the military leadership to find people they could keep. Instead the current Iraqi military is a rag tag group of people recruited to create an army.
None of this is ever as simple as we would like for it to be. In this case, I believe the current administration did what it could to clean up Bush's mess and not leave the Iraqis without the means to defend themselves after Bush annihilated their country.
Is Obama perfect? Of course not, but when anyone complains about the situation now... just remember.... it could be McCain or Romney in the White House. I'll take my chances with Obama.
