There is no question that he shot Trayvon Martin. But there is a question as to whether his killing of Martin was justified by self-defense or not.

It could go either way, so a trial is needed.

Just what happened between Martin and Zimmerman after Zimmerman made the first 911 call determines whether Zimmerman has a right to claim self-defense. Zimmerman can't decide that for himself. A jury needs to decide.

Zimmerman's story doesn't make sense. He stated in his call to 911 that he was following Zimmerman. That might be considered to have been the initial act of aggression. (Not knowing more, off hand, I would consider it to be the initial act.) We don't know what happened after that.

The special prosecutor is supposed to make an announcement soon. Hopefully then, we will know more about the evidence.
