37. Undocumented immigrants don't push down wages. Law-breaking employers do.

I live in an area where factories and corporate farms send delegations to Mexico where they promise poor young men and women the moon, get them across the border promising them work visas that never materialize, make them work slavish hours for slave wages while they live in factory/farm housing that all goes away the minute they don't do exactly what the boss says. And all while continually facing the threat of being reported to ICE for not being here and working here under proper documentation.

And then there is the disgusting abuse of the H1B visa system, which doesn't only apply to STEM jobs, but that's where the most abuse happens.

The penalties for an employer who gets caught? A fine totaling no more than 4 digits, which they more than recover by violating the law in the first place.
