(9,446 posts)In one case a child was playing with a toy gun and had not shot at anyone. In addition, it had been reported the police were told the gun was most likely a toy. Furthermore, one child was shot by the police. The police could have handled the situation better. No parent, family, community, or culture should be blamed for a 12 year old child making the mistake of pulling a toy gun from his pants, or pointing a toy gun at police officers.
As far as Robert Sandifer, yes, he had bad parents, but the system also failed him. He should have been taken from his mother's home much sooner. There was no reason he should have been put with his grandmother when there were as many as 19 kids in her home. Even if he had to be put with non-relatives he should have been put in a better situation.
