Protesters shut down north I-5 in La Jolla

Demonstrators had twice blocked a freeway in City Heights Tuesday night

LA JOLLA — A group of demonstrators briefly shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Nobel Drive in La Jolla Wednesday morning.

The California Highway Patrol got the first call about the protest around 6:49 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Doerr. Dozens of people could be seen on the freeway. At 7:18 a.m., CHP officers began to clear the group off the freeway and the lanes were reopened a few minutes later.

Several dozen people, some carrying signs saying "Hands up, don't shoot," were protesting in response to a grand jury decision not to indict a police officer in the fatal shooting of Missouri teenager Michael Brown.

Similar protests shut down a freeway in City Heights Tuesday night.

CHP officers said no traffic was able to get through during the demonstration, which caused a major backup on the freeway.
