Same for "simulated drownings."

Beatings -- what percentage of Americans beat their children or were beaten as children. That phrase covers a lot of territory.

Tell someone that their neighbor beat his child, and the someone may well shrug. Show the neighbor the pictures of the whip or belt marks on the child's back, the whip or belt marks on the child's legs and buttocks, maybe cigarette burns on the child's body, and the neighbor will be horrified.

The brief TV reports do not give enough information for people to know what "hanging by ropes" means. That is why these people should be tried in a court of law by a jury that can view and hear as much evidence as the court has time for.
