The band's roots to NJ and NY cops and first responders run quite deep. Here's Jon with guitarist Richie Sambora for 9/11 (note their T-shirts):

The day after I learned that I was getting laid off at work, I also learned that Bon Jovi would be performing a $90-a-ticket benefit for a slain New Jersey state trooper. I had the money to spare and was glad to help--but with my future income in danger, I suddenly didn't have the money to spare. What to do?

Having succeeded at getting a ticket online, I took a morning off and went on three job interviews. The concert was on a Friday, and I had an extra good time because I'd been able to make a contribution to a worthy cause that I could afford: I would be starting a new job that Monday!
