The younger half of baby boomers and older half of GenX tend to be conservative.
The "Reagan Revolution" was driven by younger boomers and older GenX. They formed a coalition that is the core of the Republican party today.
Older boomers failed to form a coalition with younger GenX. Instead, they were aligned with WWII-era Democrats. They did not address the issues younger GenX wanted addressed. As a result, younger GenX participated far less than other voting groups. Which meant far fewer young GenX entered politics. So there are far fewer of them to select from at higher levels of government.
Given the low participation rate and institutional barriers, this will probably continue until the number of older Boomers in politics drops a lot due to old age.
