There are, I believe, 18 Democratic members of the House from New York. There were 408 votes cast for Speaker. Assuming all 18 were absent (a pretty good assumption), their presence would have raised the number of votes cast to 426; a majority would be 214. Boehner got 216, so he still wins.

I haven't seen a breakdown of what other members did not vote.
